Where Exactly Is the Light At the End of the Tunnel?
It's been...wow...THREE years since my boyfriend and I bought a little fixer upper. It's a great house with "good bone structure" but it needed a lot of work.

Now, when I say a lot of work, I don't just mean we slapped a coat of paint on it and called it done. No, we basically gutted the house, and then we moved in.

Yep, say hello to the lap of luxury. For a full month we had no toilet at all (the funny part of that story is too personal to share here). Before that we had a "temp toilet" but the bathroom had no walls. No kidding, we used moving blankets for privacy.

Also, the living room had no floors, so we did our living in the bedroom for about 4 months.

All this to say that it's been a long, hard road to get here. But where exactly is "here" anyway? Well, it's nowhere near the end. At this point the light at the end of this tunnel is about the size of a firefly's butt.

And that is the hard realization that my boyfriend (hereafter referred to as Errek) and I came to last night. We took a little breather from the house to cry in our beers and quesadillas about, what else, the house. The hard realization that we've naively arrived at three years after the fact is that this DIY remodeling stuff takes all of your time and money and when you have no more time or money to give, it takes your spirit.

But, don't let my frown turn you upside down. We're just a bit bummed this week, because we've now completed two fairly large projects, but both are "temporary." They will be torn down as soon as the dream house portion of our project nears. In the meantime, we have to live in modest comfort (in other words, the folding table kitchen in the living room had worn out its welcome). In the coming blogs I'll be outlining all of our triumphs in much more triumphant terms, but right now I'm a little mired in the blasé.

But never fear, for I think that these blasé moments are what makes blogging worthwhile. In three more years I'll be able to look back and read this, and laugh.

Gee, I sure hope I'm laughing by then.

Can't wait to see it when it's done. You are on the right path, though it's a long one... ;)

I have been there. Our first house didn't have a single interior door. We lived in dust for 2 years, then moved out and rented it. Its been 13 years, and I've still not lived in a "finished" house.

Site Manager - Christina About Me: I've always had the home improvement bug, but only recently found a house truly in need of the TLC I have to share. Since purchasing the house, I've participated in nearly every form of home remodeling project there is. All with just one trip to the emergency room.
