Overview
Caulk is used to create a seal in a tub where the tile and the tub join. It prevents water from seeping up into the tiles and causing the tiles to separate from the wall and mildew to form. Caulking a tub will take a couple of days if you need to remove old caulk because the area will have to dry completely before you can apply new caulk. It can be accomplished in an hour or two if you're starting with clean surfaces.
Traditional Method
Step 1
Remove any old caulk. Silicone caulk can be removed with a razor knife. Be careful not to damage the tub or the tile. Water-based caulks are harder. Use a hair dryer to soften the caulk and then scrape it out.
Step 2
Wipe the area down with alcohol. If mildew is present, use a product designed to kill mold and mildew. Rinse and dry with a hair dryer or heat gun, or let the area dry overnight. If the area isn't completely dry, silicone caulk won't adhere.
Step 3
Use silicone caulk on fiberglass. Water-based caulk can be used on ceramic tubs and tiles. Don't use oil-based or exterior caulk.
Step 4
Cut a small opening in the tip of a tube of caulk. Apply a thin bead of caulk to the vertical surfaces first, then the back of the tub and finally the sides.
Step 5
Moisten your finger and slide it along the caulk, gently applying pressure to seat the caulk evenly in the joint. If you've applied too much caulk and it spreads out, run a damp sponge along the caulk to clean up the excess.
Step 6
Check for spots that appear to need more caulk and apply a little with your finger. The caulk will begin to set quickly so plan to do the entire job at the same time. Let the caulk dry overnight.
Caulk Strip
Step 1
Remove any old caulk with a razor knife or by softening the caulk first with a hair dryer or heat gun.
Step 2
Wipe the area down with alcohol and treat mold and mildew if necessary.
Step 3
Unroll and cut a single length of caulk strip equal to the distance around the seam to be sealed.
Step 4
Test the length and pre-bend the caulk where it will go around corners.
Step 5
Press the caulk strip into place. Follow the manufacturer's directions to determine if you should take the paper backing off before or after to you press the strip into place.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- WARNING : Clean up any spills or drips immediately. Silicone caulks are very difficult to clean once they're dried and leave a film on your hands.
