You may long for a large bathroom, but it's just not practical or possible to make the small one you have larger. Small bathrooms can have the feel of a large bathroom, however. The key is to use color effectively, minimize decorative accents, improve lighting, and remove clutter. Then your small bathroom can indeed be a great place to escape to for a long soak after a harried day. Here are some creative ideas to consider for your small bathroom.
Lighten and Brighten
Small bathrooms look best when you use light or neutral colors on the walls and floor. Consider cool colors like blue, green and violet or earth tones like sand, cream and sage green. Brighten with deeper shades of color on the towels, shower curtain and a few candles. Put in recessed can lights for better light direction. Add wall lights, as well. Put dimmers on the lights. Keep curtains minimal to let in the natural light. Add a mirror across from the window or a mirrored tile wall for added reflection and decor. Try mirrored tile around the bathtub or above the sink for added reflection, as well. Keep the woodwork a light stain or color.
Minimize
Small bathrooms look best when they free of clutter. Avoid small decorations or miscellaneous items. Put out only a few towels and store the rest. Put one large rug on the floor instead of two or three small rugs. Avoid too many shelves that stick out into the walking area. Shelving works best if it is high or if it is enclosed. If possible, have an inset cabinet that does not protrude. Consider a pedestal sink instead of a vanity. This will open the space. Place baskets under the sink for additional storage. Keep shower supplies in the bathtub. On the wall, add one large painting. Avoid collages.
Comfort
Whether your bathroom is small or large, you want it to be a place of comfort. Choose a soft rug for your bare feet. Consider adding a towel warmer. Soap and shampoo dispensers are convenient, too. Put in a small seat or stool. Add a swing-out mirror for applying makeup or shaving. Hang a Boston fern. They love moisture and are pleasing to look at.
