When remodeling a home, one of the first areas that will probably need attention is the bathroom. Because the bathroom is such a high-traffic area, floors become susceptible to damage and need to be replaced as they become worn out. When thinking of flooring ideas, it is important to consider factors such as durability and resilience to moisture.
Ceramic
Ceramic tile is an ideal floor surface because of its resilience to water and heavy traffic. Purchasing and installing ceramic can be an expensive process, and because of the time it takes for ceramic to set, you might have to stay out of your bathroom for one to three days.
Vinyl
Vinyl is the most popular option. It is the cheapest and is water resistant. Because the material is created and sold in sheets, it is easy to install and is ready for traffic almost immediately. Vinyl is not resistant to high traffic and can rip easily, especially if it is nicked by high-heeled shoes. It is also hard to repair and generally must be replaced when damaged.
Natural Stone
Natural stone is a high-end flooring material, but using tiles made of marble or granite will help your bathroom exude elegance. These natural stones are wear resistant and do not damage or scratch easily. Be prepared to pay upward of $40 per square foot.
