Overview
Wallpaper can give a different look and feel to a bathroom than paint can. Wallpaper can add a design when paint can only add color. When purchasing wallpaper you will want to buy something that will fit the style you want for your bathroom and be sure that it is a fabric-backed wallpaper due to the humidity that occurs during showers or a hot bath. When deciding to wallpaper your bathroom, be sure to have someone who can help out to save you time and effort. Trying to wallpaper alone is frustrating and will take you several hours longer, depending on the size of the job. Making sure the wallpaper is straight is easier with two people.
Step 1
Clean the wall. Wipe it down with a damp rag. Use a tape measure to determine the amount of wallpaper you will need for each area.
Step 2
Cut the wallpaper to fit the area that will be wallpapered in the bathroom. Lay it out on a flat surface and evenly wet the wallpaper. If you have wallpaper that is pre-pasted then this is all you will need to do. Otherwise you will need to apply wallpaper paste on the back rather than water. This will need to be applied evenly and with a wide brush.
Step 3
Take the wallpaper over to the wall in the bathroom you measured to cover first. Begin by placing the top of the wallpaper to the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. Do not press down until you know it is even. Then use a small paint roller to press the paper down. Stretch the remaining wallpaper to the bottom of the surface you are wallpapering. Make sure it fits tightly. Roll the paint roller all the way down the wall making sure there are no bubbles from top to bottom.
Step 4
Cut off any extra wallpaper. Sometimes you may have measured for too much wallpaper which will leave with excess paper at the end of the wall. Use a utility knife to slice off the remaining paper.
Step 5
Be careful when wallpapering around windows. This can be a little more tedious and will require accurate measurements. To avoid being short around the window sill in particularly, measure and leave up to 3 inches extra. This will give a few extra inches to work with and cut off the extra wallpaper.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Avoid putting too much water on the back of the wallpaper to avoid streaks and/or the wallpaper slipping out of place.
