Overview
Remodeling a bathroom is a time-consuming project that many homeowners will undertake. Not only does remodeling the bathroom help to ensure that you have modern fixtures, it can also add equity to the home. Regardless of the reasons for your remodel, the steps you will follow are the same.
Step 1
Choose your colors. If you plan to keep any of the items currently in the bathroom, such as the vanity, be sure to work your colors around those items.
Step 2
Determine if you are going to keep the same layout. This includes the location of the toilet, sink, tub, shower and any other items in the bathroom. If you are going to change the layout, you should check with a contractor to determine the feasibility of your plans and to find out if you need permits to complete your project.
Step 3
If you need permits, secure them before you start any of the structural work. Generally, you need permits any time you are going to alter the foundation beams, plumbing or electrical systems in the bathroom.
Step 4
Remove items from the bathroom. This includes disconnecting the toilet, tub/shower and sink. However, if you are going to reuse an item, with the exception of the toilet, it may be possible to leave it in the bathroom.
Step 5
Paint the bathroom from top to bottom: ceiling first, walls and doors next and finally the trim. If you need more than one coat, apply the subsequent coats before moving on to the next step.
Step 6
Lay the new floor. If the subfloor is damaged, fix it prior to laying the new floor. If you are using tiles, make sure that other bathroom facilities are available during the 12 to 24 hours it will take the floors to dry.
Step 7
Replace the fixtures in the bathroom. Start from the farthest wall from the door to do the installation. If the bathroom is small, install the tub/shower first, then the vanity and finally the toilet.
Step 8
Put the finishing touches on the bathroom. This can include putting up towel bars, hanging a shower curtain, putting rugs on the floor or adding pictures.
