Overview
Having insulation in your crawl space under your floor will improve energy efficiency. You will notice winter being warmer and summer being cooler. Your floor will have an even temperature and will not swing with the outdoor temperate changes. Insulation also has a built-in vapor barrier that will keep out humidity in your home.
Buying insulation in rolls rather than pre-cut is the most economical. When choosing installation, it is best to choose a type that is formaldehyde-free. It is not only earth friendly, but it will also benefit your health by not having toxic chemicals in your home environment.
Installation is simple when the proper steps are followed. Depending on the size of the area you need to insulate, it can take a weekend to accomplish so prepare ahead of time.
Step 1
Put on your dust mask, gloves and eye protection.
Step 2
Measure the length of insulation you will need in the joist with your measuring tape.
Step 3
Cut your insulation to the appropriate length with your utility knife.
Step 4
Starting at one end, put up your insulation into the joist. Put the flap out over the wood on each side, and staple each side of the flap to the joist wood. Continue doing this all the way to the end of your length, stapling about every 3 inches on each side.
Step 5
Continue following Steps 2 to 4 on each joist you need to insulate. If you come across wiring, it is best to keep the wiring outside of the insulation. If you can't do this, you could stop the insulation at the wire and continue on the other side of it. The same can be done for plumbing--stopping the insulation and continuing on the other side.
