Unique Deck Ideas

unique deck ideas :
Installing a deck is an excellent way to add an attractive and functional design element to your yard. Whether your home already had a deck installed when you purchased it, or you are thinking of building of your own deck from scratch, you can find some unique ideas here for designing a fun and useful space.

Free-Standing Deck

While the traditional deck is an extension of the back porch and attached to the house, a large yard may benefit from a free-standing deck located in a back corner of the space. This raised deck space can be used as a small stage for backyard events or a seating area from which you can observe the yard and home.

Decorative Inset

If you already have a deck but are looking for a way to give it your own unique touch, consider installing a decorative inset in the center of the flooring. Measure and cut out a square in the center of the deck and install planks of wood in a diamond shape. You can also use this method for installing a decorative tile or other inset.

Post Caps

Post caps provide a quick and easy way to add color to your deck design. Post caps are available in metal, wood, or colored glass. Most are designed to fit standard 4 by 4 or 6 by 6 posts. You can use these on all of the posts, or just those located in corners or near steps. Shop online or at your local hardware store for decorative post caps.

Deck Lighting

No deck space is complete without ample lighting to brighten up your evening events. A wide variety of deck lighting is available in the form of post lights. These can be attached to the top of any standard sized post. For more unique options, consider recessed step lights along the bottom of the railing, and especially on each step, or post lighting mounted on the post below the top of the railing.

Benches

Built-in benches installed along the edge of the deck provide an excellent seating option. These are weather-resistant and much easier than bulky furniture which needs to be hauled in and out of the house or garage when a storm is brewing or winter comes along. Consider building your benches with a hinged top and hidden storage inside for gardening supplies or outdoor toys. When installing the benches, you may also want to install some built-in flower boxes between benches or in the corners to brighten up the deck space.
