Overview

installing linoleum flooring : Overview
Linoleum is a versatile and durable flooring option. It is available in a wide range of colors and texture options. Linoleum flooring is created by using a combination of linseed oil and wood fibers, making it an eco-friendly alternative to traditional flooring choices. In addition to the green benefits, installing linoleum flooring is a relatively easy job. Depending on the size of floor, the task can be completed over the course of a long afternoon.

Step 1

Carefully remove baseboard and quarter rounds from the wall. In addition, pull up heating grates and unscrew any floor mounted electrical plates to keep them from becoming soiled or damaged during the installation process.

Step 2

Clear away any debris from the wood sub flooring. This includes nails and staples or other sharp objects that could create a hole in the linoleum.

Step 3

Install 1/4-inch plywood sheeting over the sub flooring. Nail or screw down the plywood every eight inches.

Step 4

Determine the center point of the four walls in your room. Use a chalk line to create two intersecting lines from center point to center point. The point where the lines meet is the center of your room.

Step 5

Determine the layout pattern for your linoleum tiles by dry fitting them starting at the center point in the room.

Step 6

Use a utility knife to cut any tiles that are too big to fit into a space.

Step 7

Remove tiles in a small section of your room. Apply flooring adhesive in a circular motion, using a trowel. Press tiles into the adhesive.

Step 8

Move to the next area and repeat the installation process until all tiles are applied.

Step 9

Uses a nail gun and finishing nails to reinstall baseboards a quarter rounds.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : To ensure that the tiles are adhered firmly, run a floor roller (typically 100 pounds) over the surface. This can be rented at your local hardware store.
