Overview
Unless you enjoy eating in the dark, a light is essential to have over your dining room table. However, you don't want to sit down and have the light at eye level, nor do you want it touching the ceiling. Follow these simple tips for hanging your light in the perfect place over your table so you can enjoy a well-lit meal.
Step 1
Make sure the light is centered over the table.
Step 2
For an 8-foot ceiling, the light should hang 30 to 34 inches above the table; for a 9-foot ceiling, hang the light 33 to 37 inches above the table. If your ceiling is higher than 9 feet, simply add 3 inches for every foot to arrive at the perfect height for your room.
Step 3
Once you've measured the proper height, hang your light and enjoy.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : When choosing a light, keep in mind the scale of your table and the room to avoid buying a light fixture too small or large for the space.
The light should be a foot narrower than your table as a general rule.
- WARNING : High-wattage light bulbs will overheat your diners and create an uncomfortable glare, making eating less enjoyable.
