Modern looks mixed with function are what the teen bedroom is all about. Pastels and light colors for the ladies are great foundation colors for any room. Neutral colors in brown, blue and olive greens are popular for the guys. Making a teen's room a comfortable place where he can express his interests and keep up with his busy lifestyle is important.
Furniture Storage Units
A popular decorating unit---especially in small spaces---is storage units. These units act as headboards, shelving sections and under-the-bed storage drawers that accentuate the bed. Many come in solid wood or wood veneer finishes. This is a great way to store books, magazines and video games. Childhood mementos such as pictures, theme park toys and trophies can be showcased in the open area of the storage units. Closed cabinets offer a place to store extra blankets or a clean set of bedding.
Wall Murals
This is a great way to make a plain wall come to life! A wall mural can come in a variety of life-size designs such as a snowboarder, football player, beach scene, and hockey game. Murals can also carry the theme to the rest of the room. For example, if the teen chose a snowboarding wall mural---the walls can be painted blue or white and have decorative accents such as snowshoes or snowboards on the wall. Silhouette wall decals are also popular. Found at pbteen, silhouettes can accent a light-colored wall with a soccer, football or volleyball-themed player.
Lockers
Locker accents are a great look for a teen room. Here, faces of lockers provide organization that is helpful for maintaining a clean and tidy room. A magazine rack made from locker door panels keeps track of homework, magazines and sketch pads. Stacked half-size lockers are great for storage of sports equipment and electronics. Locker-faced bins hold CDs, DVDs and school books.
Desk Areas
Desks are a must-have in most teen rooms. Teens need to study and have adequate workspace for schoolwork and projects. Old drum cymbals make great wall accents for the music-inspired teen. Sharpie or other permanent markers can create a permanent title for each cymbal, such as notes, study and practice. Hung above a desk---the cymbals, accented with sticky notes can prove to be helpful reminders for important dates and things to do. Clip lights are great for adding localized light on work areas. They come in a variety of colors and are flexible enough to meet the needs of the teen.
Beds and Spreads
The bedspread and bed in a teen room are the main focal points. An array of styles and designs are available. Trundle beds, two twins and bunk beds are popular choices---especially for teens who love to entertain and have friends sleep over. For the ladies---mixing and matching bright colors with pastels along with florals and stripes is popular. Shag and faux fur make great rug accent pieces. For the guys, large stripes, camouflage and sports graphics are great themes for bedspreads.
