Overview
Whether you are adding an accent wall to your living room or painting the walls between your kitchen and dining room, you will eventually need to paint adjoining walls different colors at some point in your life. You can paint adjoining walls different colors with the results of a professional by following these steps.
Step 1
Start by painting the lighter color wall. You will want to cover the wall with at least two coats of paint. Allow the wall to dry for 24 hours before working with the second color.
Step 2
Place a line of painter's tape along the far edge of the wall. This is the edge of the wall that you want to ensure none of the second color bleeds into.
Step 3
Paint with the first paint color on top of the painter's tape, feathering outwards onto the wall where you will be placing the second paint color. This is going to seal the painter's tape. If you skip this step when you paint the darker color, it could bleed underneath the painter's tape and end up on your lighter-colored wall.
Step 4
Allow this surface to dry to the touch, usually about 2 hours.
Step 5
Paint the darker color on the adjoining wall, painting along the painter's tape. It is fine to have the darker color fall on top of the painter's tape. Continue painting the entire wall and allow to dry for 24 hours.
Step 6
Remove the painter's tape from the top of your wall down to the bottom of the wall. Do this slowly.
