Decorating kids' bedrooms is fun and easy. This is a chance to let your child be part of the planning and to include your child's own creations for the decor. Decorating a child's room does not have to be expensive. The main ingredient is paint. You want the room to be bright and a place your child will love to play, read and sleep.
Ways to Decorate With Color
Paint one wall a bright color, and keep the other walls a neutral color. Another approach is to paint all the walls a neutral color, but paint the trim with a bright color.
Add color by accenting with curtains, picture frames, lamps, a bedspread and pillows. Another way to add accent is to find an old desk and chair. Paint them a bright color. Add a cushion for the chair, which matches the pillows on the bed.
Carry the color to a corner of the room for reading. Add toss pillows in bright colors and a scatter rug.
Ways to Use Your Child's Creativity
Frame your child's drawings in primary colored frames and place them on one wall or throughout the room.
Paint one wall with chalkboard paint, so your child can create his or her own drawings.
Have your child design mobiles to hang from the ceiling.
Let your child apply glow-in-the-dark murals to one wall.
Go through your child's toys and place the one's he or she doesn't use on a shelf across the top of the walls.
Take ideas from your child's favorite character, hobby or sport and decorate with posters, ballet slippers, baseball mitts or pictures of the planets.
Ways to Organize
Add floor-to-ceiling shelves on one wall. Fill the shelves with your child's favorite books, movies, stuffed animals and toys.
Place a coat rack in the room to hang your child's favorite dress-up clothes.
Set an umbrella stand near the door to collect the tall sporting items such as bats, hockey sticks or fishing rods.
Buy colorful plastic containers and label them for storing items. In the closet, add stackable drawers for additional storage. Label the drawers.
