How to Refinish Cabinets

Step 1

Remove the cabinet doors. You do this by unscrewing the hinges.

Step 2

Remove all the handles and hinges from the doors and the fronts of the cabinets.

Step 3

Fill the holes left by the hinge and handle screws with wood filler. Allow time for the wood filler to dry completely.

Step 4

Sand any rough or uneven edges of the cabinet doors and fronts. Sand the areas you applied wood filler to make sure the surface is flat and smooth.

Step 5

Paint the doors and cabinet fronts the desired color or colors. Allow plenty of time for the paint to dry completely .

Step 6

Pick out new door handles for the cabinets and buy matching door hinges.

Step 7

Hang the cabinet doors using the new hinges you bought. This is done by screwing one side of the hinge into the back of the cabinet door, and the other side of the hinge into the cabinet front. Attach the hinges at the same height and interval as the previous hinges. For example, if the old cabinet had one hinge at the top of the door and one hinge at the bottom, than that is where you want to put the new hinges.

Step 8

Install the new door handles. You do this by taking the screws, which should come with the door handle, and screwing it in through the back of the door. Once the tip of the screw comes through the front of the door, Hold the new handle up to the door over the tip of the screw. Continue putting the screw through the door and into the screw hole in the handle.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Pick out your new handles and hinges ahead of time so you don't have to waste time running to the hardware store.
  • WARNING : If you want to stain the cabinet doors, you'll have to use chemical stripper to completely strip the cabinet doors and fronts. This process will take a couple days, and you have to work in a well-ventilated place.
