Designing small kitchens can be a daunting task. We live in a time when people have an abundance of possessions and this extends into the kitchen. Ideas for designing small kitchens need to take into consideration storage areas, work areas and floor layouts. This is not always easy, but it can be done with ideas for designing a small kitchen that offers comfort, functionality and charm. The right design ideas will transform a small room into a wonderful dream kitchen.
Appliances
Small Stove DesignShrink appliances down to a smaller size to add space. For example, consider a dishwasher that is approximately 18 inches across. Many miniature dishwashers offer racks that can be adjusted to make up for its smaller size. Another idea is a stove with less cook-top area, such as two to three burners. Smaller refrigerators are available, again with shelving that can be switched around for ultimate food storage. Consider not installing appliances never used, such as an oven if only a microwave or stove top is routinely used. Smaller appliances open up more space for other kitchen design ideas.
Create an Illusion
Fold Down TableCreating an illusion of a bigger kitchen is a key concept in small kitchen design. Not only will it look better, it also keeps the occupants from feeling cramped in a small place. Lighting is a basic way of making the room look larger. Natural lighting from an overhead window is best but white lighting installed overhead can also work. Another way for making the room seem larger is color. Light colors will cause reflection and seem to add space while darker colors can actually make the small kitchen look even smaller. Also, Instead of a regular kitchen table, make one from an extra piece of counter top or install a vintage fold down table on the wall. Consider stools instead of chairs. If chairs are preferred, transparent chairs are unique and aid in reflecting light to make the area look bigger.
Storage
Wall StorageWhen designing a small kitchen carefully plan the storage space to prevent a cluttered look. Keep limited counters clear for using as work areas. Think out of the box for small kitchen storage solutions. Mount spice bottles on the inside of cabinets. Set a small microwave into a small cupboard instead of on the counter. Hang cooking utensils from the ceiling or put into wall containers. If the cabinets are tall, use a tiered turntable to double up space for small cups and glasses. Attach wire baskets underneath cabinets or even under a small table to hold dishcloths. If kitchen chairs are decorated with pull-over chair covers, use the kind with a back pouch for small cookbooks. With creative design ideas and by owning only what you actually use small kitchen designing results in a beautiful efficient room.
