Overview
Ceramic tile is both inexpensive and practical for today's living. Families with dogs and children especially appreciate ceramic tile for its durability. Unfortunately, it is not always feasible to hire someone to install the tile. The labor alone is usually more then the cost of the tile.
Step 1
Measure the wall's width and length to determine how much tile will be needed. Purchase at least one extra box for cutting and so that you will have extra tiles in case of breakage.
Step 2
Start with a clean, smooth surface and place the tiles out in the pattern that you would like them to lay. Instead of starting at the end of the wall, it is better to start in the middle and work your way out. This will create symmetry in the pattern and the cut tiles will end up the same on both ends of the wall.
Step 3
Mix the mortar according to package directions. Begin to apply the mortar with the trowel first to the wall and then to the tiles, working in small areas at a time. The mortar dries quickly so you don't want it to dry out before you get it onto the wall. Apply slight pressure to each tile and give it a little twist to set into place. Place a tile spacer on each side of the tiles as you lay them, so that you create a straight line for grouting.
Step 4
Measure and cut the tiles for any small areas at each end of the wall and apply them to the wall as well. Let the tile set according to the package directions for the mortar. Usually overnight is sufficient time for the mortar to set.
Step 5
Remove the tile spacers and mix the grout according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply the grout with the grout float working the mixture deep into the spaces between the tiles. Wipe any excess with a wet sponge, rinsing it constantly in clean water. Let the grout dry according to the package directions before applying the grout sealer to each grout line. The sealer will keep the grout clean and will help to keep moisture from getting under the tiles.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Your helper can cut the tiles as you lay them to help keep the project flowing.
